Nature of Pulses-Pigeon Peas, Ragi

Pigeon Peas:

Pigeon peas have moderate calories but are high in nutrients. Eating them raw helps in losing weight and adds to the fiber content. These peas contain a whole lot of carbohydrate, fat, and protein. Pigeon peas are a healthy substitute for meat. They are a great source of nutrition for humans as well as livestock.

These peas can be grown easily, can survive unfavourable conditions and poor soil quality. They can be dried as well as stored without much hassle. They contains a number of vitamins such as thiamine, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, and manganese.

The content of saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium in pigeon peas is quite low. Constituting pigeon peas in your diet along with other grains, nuts and fruits make a healthy source of essential nourishment for the body.

Pigeon peas can even be sprouted by soaking them in a bowl full of water for a day or two. Sprouting increases flavour and digestibility, although they can be even ground into flour.

Ragi:

Indian climatic conditions are the most suitable to cultivate this crop. Ragi is popular across the globe by the name finger millet. Although there are a number of cereals and grains available in the market, they all come with added preservatives, excessive salts and are loaded with a whole lot of sugar and carbs.

You should instead include cereals like Ragi in your meals which are gluten free, unrefined and natural in all ways. Calcium, protein, iron and a number of other minerals are present in this universal cereal. The fact that it contains less saturated fats makes it a perfect food for those looking forward to losing weight.

A unique amino acid Tryptophan in Ragi helps curb appetite. As compared to rice or other grains, Ragi has the highest amount of fiber content. It makes you fuller for longer without adding any additional fats or calories to your body.

It has plenty of calcium and vitamin D which strengthen bone health. The intake of Ragi improves the development of bone in growing children, prevents bone erosion in adults and also gives relief in Osteoporosis (a health disorder in which bones become brittle and fragile due to lack of calcium and or loss of tissue).
