Rice is no doubt, one of the staple foods across the globe. But when it comes to calories and health benefits, chapati is always given much more preference than chawal. There are numerous studies which prove that rice is harmful for our health in a number of ways, yet it is consumed by almost all of us.

Both rice and wheat are rich in proteins, fibers and fats, which makes it difficult to choose one of them as an accompaniment with our meals. A single serving of white rice which is equal to one medium-sized cup includes 4.4 grams of protein, 53 grams of carbs, 1 gram of fat and 242 calories. Chapati has 5 grams of fat out of which, 1.3 grams are saturated. Intake of saturated fat can lower the chances of heart stroke and also help maintain the level of cholesterol in the body.

When it comes to fiber, the same amount of rice mentioned above contains, less than one gram of fiber, whereas chapati has 3.3 grams of fiber in it. Fiber has a lot of benefits, one of which is improved digestion.

RICE

  • Boiled rice gives relief in diarrhea, stomach upset and digestion problems. It is easy to chew and light.
  • Brown rice can be substituted with your regular rice to prevent the risk of heart diseases. Both white, as well as regular white rice, are full of fiber, magnesium, phosphorous and niacin which lowers the level of bad cholesterol, but brown rice is considered a much healthier version.

CHAPATI

  • Rotis are good for those who are into body building. Whole grain wheat chapatis contain carbohydrate which boosts muscle growth and energy.
  • Wheat chapatis make you feel fuller for a long while. They help raise the blood sugar level, which makes roti a good alternative for diabetic patients. You may even add soya powder while kneading dough to increase its nutrients.

People across the world, have been eating rice since ages. What people should know that the problem is not rice but polished rice. Processed rice washes away all the nutrients from naturally grown grains thereby making them harmful for health.

There are a lot of varieties when it comes to polished rice. Go for the one which is minimally processed. Polishing of rice decreases its content of fibers, fat, proteins, minerals, polyphenols and vitamin E. It increases the content of carbohydrates. The solution to this is not avoiding rice completely but accompanying it with other nutritional meals such as cereals and chapatis.
